Miami Mayor Francis Suarez is calling on residents to wear masks inside their own homes to reduce the spread of COVID-19 among family members, Business Insider reports.

Coronavirus cases within households are the largest category of COVID-19 outbreak in the city, and transmission between family members is the most common way to spread it, he said.

“Our messaging has always been, if you’re outside or if you’re indoors you need to wear a mask and you need to socially distance,” the mayor said.

“I would tell our residents — and this is voluntary, this is not something that we can mandate — that they should consider, particularly if they have a multigenerational household, wearing masks indoors, at times, with their multigenerational residents and also respecting social distance when they’re at home,” Suarez said. “Because again we’re seeing the largest center of spread being our house.”

Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez echoed Suarez’s suggestion that people socially distance at home with their families.

“Something that I want to stress to is that, even inside the house, even inside your home, because we have such a high level of positivity rate here in Miami-Date, you also need to start thinking about keeping your distance from your loved ones for a while,” Gimenez said at a press conference on Thursday.

“Yes, I know it’s a sacrifice, but so because, again, just because it’s your son or your daughter or your cousin, or your father, doesn’t mean they don’t have COVID.”
