If there is any rhyme or reason, any logic, in Michigan Empress Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s determinations of what’s essential and what’s non-essential during the shutdown, I haven’t been able to find it.
ProTip: That’s what happens when you quickly compose vague edicts with the sole purpose of antagonizing your political rivals.
Residents can buy alcohol and food but can’t buy seeds to grow their own. They can’t buy clothes or car seats (or maybe they can now; she claims that when one Wal-Mart store blocked off that aisle it was due to misunderstanding the law). Residents can’t travel to their in-state vacation homes, but non-residents can travel to their vacation homes in Michigan. Residents can’t get their hair done or teeth cleaned or receive “elective” medical treatment, but they can get an abortion. Whitmer is going to the wall defending that decision, going so far as to claim that it’s “life-sustaining.”

Whitmer appeared on former Obama adviser David Axelrod’s podcast and was asked why elective abortions were still available in Michigan when many other states correctly termed them elective procedures and, therefore, non-essential. Whitmer replied:
You know, we stopped elective surgeries here in Michigan, and some people have tried to say that that type of a procedure is considered the same, and that’s ridiculous. You know, a woman’s healthcare, her whole future, her ability to decide if and when she starts a family, is — is not an election. It is a — fundamental to her life. It is life-sustaining, and it’s something that government should not be getting in the middle of.
Oh, but let’s put government in the middle of literally everything else.
Compared to “non-essential” activities like a routine dental cleaning, manicure, pedicure, or a haircut, an elective abortion procedure is incredibly risky in the time of Wuhan flu. Abortion clinic workers are put at risk, and the mother is put at risk of contracting the virus from a clinic worker.
Besides, if everyone is supposed to be sheltering in their home and not within six feet of people who don’t live in their home, how many people are getting knocked up? Michigan’s Stay at Home order went into effect March 24, three weeks ago. We can all do the math and realize that, for the most part, only people who are really bad at social distancing (and using birth control) are getting pregnant “unexpectedly.”
Tucker Carlson said Friday night that all of Whitmer’s determinations are governed by one thing – pure politics. That’s right, this woman who belongs to the “Party of Science” isn’t using any epidemiological evidence in her public health policy determinations. Shocking.
Tucker Carlson:
“Gretchen Whitmer is a ghoul. She is a dangerous ideologue who knows nothing about science and doesn’t care to learn. Gretchen Whitmer deems elective abortion essential because the abortion lobby has bankrolled her political career.” pic.twitter.com/lDXhctE418

“Gretchen Whitmer is a ghoul. She’s a dangerous ideologue who knows nothing about science and doesn’t care to learn. Whitmer deems elective abortion essential because the abortion lobby has bankrolled her political career. She’s encouraging liquor and lotto ticket sales in her state because sin taxes levied on the poorest people in Michigan fund her government. She bans church services because she knows who her political opponents are.
These are not decisions rooted in epidemiology or science. They are partisan political decisions, every one, and she’s not the only governor making them.”
Just wait until abortion clinic employees and formerly pregnant women start dying from the Chinese coronavirus. Will Whitmer still claim that the procedure was “life-sustaining”?
