Campbell County, Virginia now calls itself a “sanctuary” from Democrat Governor Ralph Northam’s coronavirus restrictions, as well as from his efforts to restrict gun rights.
Last November, Campbell joined a handful of other Virginia counties passing resolutions adopting the moniker of “Second Amendment Sanctuary” in response to Gov. Northam’s anti-gun agenda. “Counties are saying, ‘Look, we are not going to enforce any unconstitutional gun laws in our jurisdiction,'” the Virginia Citizens Defense League’s Phil Van Cleave told local station NBC 4 at the time.
On Tuesday, the Campbell County Board of Supervisors unanimously passed a resolution adding First Amendment rights to its sanctuary protections.
The county now provides “First Amendment Sanctuary” from Gov. Northam’s Draconian coronavirus restrictions, WRIC reports:
“The resolution was proposed in response to tighter virus restrictions announced by Northam before Thanksgiving limiting public gatherings to 25 people or fewer, expanding Virginia’s mask mandate to include children over the age of five and prohibiting restaurants from selling alcohol after 10 p.m.”
The resolution calls on local law officers to refuse to “enforce the unconstitutional order,” according to WRIC:
“Campbell County’s measure requests that its sheriff’s department not assist any official, whether it be a state law enforcement officer, federal agent or state health agent, “attempting to enforce the unconstitutional order of the Governor.”
Nonetheless, Gov. Northam says he expects that “law enforcement will be part of the solution.”
