(CNSNews.com) — According to Gallup, an average 12% of Americans say they smoke marijuana, which is up from 7% in 2013. Also, the data show that among those who identify as “liberal,” 24% of them smoke pot. For “conservatives,” only 4% smoke pot.
In the survey, Gallup asked, “Keeping in mind that your answers are confidential, do you, yourself smoke marijuana?”
In response, 15% of men and 9% of women said yes, for an average of 12%.

Ideologically, among the liberals, 24% said they smoke dope as do and 12% of the “moderates.” Four percent of “conservatives” said they smoke marijuana.
The largest percentage of pot smokers was among people age 18 to 29, and among people who live in the West (16%).
Only 7% of those who live in the South said they smoke pot, the lowest percentage by region.
Commenting, Gallup said,
- Men (15%) are more likely to smoke marijuana than women (9%).
- At 22%, 18- to 29-year-olds are the most likely age group to smoke marijuana — about twice as likely as those between the ages of 30 and 64, and seven times as likely as adults older than 65.
- Liberals (24%) are six times more likely to smoke marijuana than conservatives (4%), and twice as likely as moderates (12%).
“Meanwhile, 33 states have legalized marijuana in some way for adults — whether for medicinal or recreational use; however, only one of those states, Florida, is in the South, which is reflected in that region’s lower rate of marijuana users,” reported Gallup.

Some of the states where marijuana is legal include Alaska, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Illinois, Nevada, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington.
For its survey, Gallup interviewed by telephone 1,525 adults, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
