It seems that matters might be getting worse for accused Epstein accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell. The British socialite who is suspected of helping the convicted child rapist prey on a number of underaged girls has been awaiting trial since her arrest on July 2. Now, it appears that she might be facing new charges.
According to court documents that were filed on Friday, the investigation into Epstein’s sex trafficking operations is still active. Federal prosecutors revealed this in a letter sent to a judge requesting to prevent her from filing new information in civil cases.
The New York Post reported that the accused accomplice’s lawyers stated that this “critical new information” could “jeopardize their ongoing investigation if it is allowed to be filed in the civil cases.”
In the letter, prosecutors wrote, “As the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York has stated publicly, the investigation into the conduct of the defendant in this case and other possible co-conspirators of Jeffrey Epstein remains active.”
They continued, “The full scope and details of that investigation, however, have not been made public.”
Maxwell is currently facing a six-count indictment for obtaining three girls as targets for abuse and lying about it under oath. She has pleaded not guilty and has been held without bail.
The New York Post pointed out that, “The US Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of New York, which brought both cases, has repeatedly publicly warned that the probe in alleged co-conspirators of Epstein remain ongoing.”
Maxwell’s legal team has been quite active even before the trial, trying to get her better living conditions inside the prison and attempting to keep sensitive documents sealed. Currently, they are attempting to persuade a judge to keep a collection of documents sealed because they might be potentially embarrassing to their client. Her attorneys claimed that Maxwell’s chances of receiving a fair trial could be endangered if the judge agreed to release the deposition she gave in 2016.
The deposition in question was taken for a defamation case brought against her by Virginia Roberts Giuffre, who also accused Epstein of abusing her. The plaintiff alleges that Maxwell helped the financier keep her as a “sex slave.”
Some of the documents in the deposition have already been released. They were published on July 30 and included emails between Epstein and Maxwell, who were identified as “jeffrey E” and either “G Maxwell” or “Gmax.”
If the investigation into Epstein’s sex trafficking network is continuing, it might even result in something bigger than more charges for Ghislaine Maxwell. While more evidence of further wrongdoing is likely to surface, what about others who may have been involved?
After Epstein’s death, Attorney General William Barr cautioned that his associates should not “rest easy,” and it is clear that there were other individuals involved with Epstein’s crimes. Perhaps if the Justice Department does its job, Maxwell’s prosecution will only be the beginning.
