Washington, DC — From the time he came into office, President Trump told everyone he would be taking a hardline stance against China. His mission was to get Americans a fair deal. He said he was tired of Americans losing to China.
What we did not realize was he was not only going to help the American economy to win again, but also point out key flaws in our Chinese diplomatic relations. We knew that China was a corrupt country, but their true colors are now showing.
The story came back into the limelight this week, as the US ordered the Chinese consulate in Houston to be closed. It did not take China long to respond, as they ordered a US consulate closed as well. The US ordered the closure as it claims the Houston consulate was part of an espionage network.
The extent of the Chinese spy network in the US is not completely known, but it is apparently very well established. Just over the last two days, two cases show that the Chinese are working hard in our country.
The first is in the case of an arrested Chinese military researcher. She was arrested after fleeing to the Chinese consulate in San Francisco. She was interviewed by the FBI for reported visa fraud. She denied any relation to the Peoples Liberation Army in China (PLA), but the US had uncovered photos of her in uniform.
A second was a follow up from 2019 with a Singapore main, who pled guilty to being a spy for the Chinese government. Jun Wei Yeo pled guilty on Friday to working from 2015-2019 for the Chinese government as an agent. He used his political consultancy in the US to obtain information for the Chinese.
There are several things to be learned from the consulate closure. The move by both can be seen as symbolic, but it definitely hurts the Chinese more than the US.
The Houston Chinese consulate was the first opened in the US after the US opened relations with China in the 1970s. It was a pride-filled moment for the Chinese and many Chinese immigrants had flocked to Houston as part of the moment. So not only did the US make an uncharacteristic move to close a consulate, but they also made a significantly symbolic move to close this specific consulate.
China had a choice in many consulates to close, but the closure in Chengdu was one of the least important for US presence in China. In essence, it was a show of strength to their people and the world, but China knew that it would have little effect on their relations with the US.
A lot of political pundits have been critical of Trump’s move to take a hardline stance with China, but the move is proving to be the right one. Not only is China winning on the economic front, but they are acquiring key information from the US without paying anything for it.
The situation with China is far from over. The Justice Department will continue to investigate the depth of this espionage network and we should expect further accusations and arrests.
More importantly, Americans should be paying attention to these small details. President Trump is holding true to his promise of helping America win. The media and the left will continue to tell you he is destroying international relationships and setting the US back decades in trade relations.
Just remember, those decades of trade relations are those where we have given a communist country a trade partner to build their country on. China is no longer just a country without much political power. They are garnering attention around the world, with influence that stretches far beyond their borders.
