(CNSNews.com) — Georgia State Rep. Vernon Jones (D), a “lifelong Democrat,” said he supports President Donald Trump and cited the success of Trump’s policies in reducing black unemployment to a historic low (before COVID-19), criminal justice reform, protecting the nation from illegal immigration, and Trump’s support for historically black colleges.
Rep. Jones, who is not switching political parties, added, “I didn’t leave the Democratic Party. The Democratic Party left me.”
In an April 15 video-post on Twitter, Rep. Jones said, “This is Vernon Jones, and I’m a proud member of the Georgia House of Representatives. But I’ve also been a lifelong Democrat. But today, I’m announcing my support and endorsement of Donald J. Trump’s campaign reelection.”
“Now, let me be clear about one thing, I didn’t leave the Democratic Party,” said Jones. “The Democratic Party left me.”
He continued, “But one would say, why would a black man support Donald Trump? Well, I would reverse that, why wouldn’t a black man endorse Donald Trump? Isn’t he the president that ushered in the lowest unemployment rate among blacks before the pandemic crisis?”

“Isn’t he the president that signed the criminal justice reform act?” said Jones. “And, finally, isn’t he the president that overwhelmingly supported, financially, historical black colleges, of which I’m a proud graduate of North Carolina Central University.
“I 100% support Donald Trump,” said Jones. “Peace out, America.”
In a statement issued to the press, Jones further said, “A generation of African American families have been devastated by draconian policies that Joe Biden supported and voted for when he served in the U.S. Senate. A change was needed and President Trump took action.”

Vernon Jones, 59, served in the Georgia House of Representatives 1993-2001, and was reelected in 2016. From 2001 to 2009, he served as the chief executive officer of DeKalb County.
