President Joe Biden is reportedly thinking about limiting who can get the proposed $2,000 stimulus checks causing Democrats from within his own party to begin accusing him of breaking promises he made during his campaign.
Now that Biden is in power, he’s looking to diminish the amount received for people who make more money.
From the Washington Post:
Biden has publicly expressed willingness to negotiate the stimulus payments, which under Democrats’ current plans would begin to diminish at $75,000 for individuals and couples making $150,000 a year. Biden is also aiming to provide $1,400 per every adult and child under that threshold, on top of the $600 per adult and child approved by Congress in December.
One proposal discussed by senior Democrats includes lowering the threshold for the payments to begin phasing out above $50,000 for single taxpayers, $75,000 for people who file as the heads of households, and $100,000 for married couples, according to two people granted anonymity to discuss internal planning. These people stress that the conversations are fluid and legislation has not been finalized.
Biden previously promised that the $2,000 checks would be sent out “immediately” if the two Democrat Senate candidates in Georgia won.
“Their election will put an end to the block in Washington — that $2,000 stimulus check — that money would go out the door immediately, to help people who are in real trouble,” Biden said during the Georgia runoffs. “Think about what it will mean to your lives — putting food on the table, paying rent.”
Biden not delivering on his promise to dole out the $2,000 checks would be bad enough, but on top of that, his promise to wheel the checks out immediately is looking far less likely as Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said that it’s not likely going to happen until mid-March.
Between the diminished checks and the late arrival of said checks, plus the termination of thousands of jobs one day one, Biden may begin facing very real problems within his own party as angry constituents begin banging down the doors of elected representatives.
This may only compound as Biden has promised to raise the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour, which would force many businesses to cut hours and lay people off. Employment will suffer across the nation and with missing checks and no jobs to be had, Biden is swiftly digging himself into a hole he’s not going to be able to crawl out of just like his former boss, Barack Obama, did.
