Not that this was a surprise to anyone familiar with her penchant for saying and doing stupid things, but Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI) did not exactly cover herself in glory during the confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett.
To quickly recap, Hirono actually asked Judge Barrett if she had ever sexually assaulted anyone. Here was her exact question: “Since you became a legal adult, have you ever made unwanted requests for sexual favors or committed any verbal or physical harassment or assault of a sexual nature?”
In another moment that sealed Hirono’s place in the wackadoodle hall of fame, Hirono took issue with Judge Barrett’s use of the term “sexual preference” when talking about gay rights cases. “Sexual preference is an offensive and outdated term, it is used by anti-LGBTQ activists to suggest that sexual orientation is a choice — it is not,” Hirono claimed at the time.
“So even though you didn’t give a direct answer I think your response did speak volumes,” the senator stated. “Not once but twice you used the term ‘sexual preference’ to describe those in the LGBTQ community.”

It was pointed out at the time by conservatives that the term “sexual preference” was actually used by, among other prominent Democrats, the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg as well as Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden. But Hirono was never confronted about this by the mainstream media because that would mean having to do actual journalism.
Fast forward to this week, and Hirono was finally told the inconvenient truths about Ginsburg and Biden making arguments about gay rights using these terms. Her response when National Review’s John McCormack asked her about this was something else:
NR: Do you stand by that criticism?
Mazie Hirono: Well, of course.
NR: Do you think Joe Biden should apologize for saying that in May?
Hirono: Well, look, it’s a lesson learned for all of us. But when you’re going on the Supreme Court and you’ve been a judge, as one of my judge friends said, you should know what these words mean.
NR: Should Joe Biden apologize, too, like Amy Coney Barrett did?
Hirono: Joe Biden is not up for the Supreme Court.
NR: He’s up for the presidency. So, he shouldn’t apologize?
Hirono: People will decide.
NR: You don’t want to call on him to apologize?
Hirono: Oh, stop it. The world is in flames.
Got that? Though the world was also “in flames” during the SCOTUS confirmation hearings, that didn’t stop Hirono from launching the ridiculous attack against Barrett. In fact, Hirono’s rant went so viral that Webster’s dictionary actually changed the definition of “preference” the day she made the argument so as to fit her attack.
What Hirono is actually admitting here is what we have long known about Democrats: There are one set of standards they (and the mainstream media) hold Republicans to, and no set of standards to which they hold themselves.
It’s infuriating but worth documenting them more or less admitting it all the same.
