Maddow: Should We Send Trump Officials To Jail For Election Behavior To Prevent It From Becoming The Norm? | Video

MSNBC host Rachel Maddow asked NAACP Legal Defense Counsel Sherrilyn Ifill on her Monday show if some Trump officials who are challenging the election should be sent to jail so they feel like they did something wrong in order to stop Trumpism from becoming the “norm.”

RACHEL MADDOW: I feel like one of the things that we are — I feel like we’re entering a new phase. We’ve got the GSA ascertaining that President-elect Joe Biden is going to be the next president. There should be a transition process. The president basically acceding to that.

We’ve got this thing that’s ended in Michigan in terms of the certification. I feel like we’re sort of now waking up to new realities. One of the things that I’m concerned about is what the Trump administration is going to do during this lame-duck period and in the transition to try to set the place on fire proverbially as they go.

I think a lot of people are also worried about what you were describing there, about these tactics both by the president and by his campaign and by Republicans who support him that after an election, elections officials are now subject to lobbying, subject to pressure, subject to enticement or threats in a way that should get them to do whatever their party or the party in power or anybody else who has an effect in terms of influencing them can get them to do.

I want to go back to that not being a norm in our democracy. I’m worried that now that the Trump administration has set this precedent, it will be, and it feels like the only way to stop that becoming the new normal, at least in Republican politics, is for some people to go to jail for it or to feel like they are going to get in trouble if they get caught doing something like that. Is that the right way to think about it?
