A little earlier today, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo took some time out from lying to the media about his central role in the slaughter of thousands of vulnerable New Yorkers in nursing homes to take on the very concept of freedom of religion. In an interview that touched on the up-tick in positive tests for Wuhan virus. It is mostly dross, but at about the 6:00 mark, you get something that you can imagine being said at the Wannsee Conference:

“I have to say to the Orthodox community tomorrow, ‘If you’re not willing to live with these rules, then I’m going to close the synagogues.’”

This is insane. There is no Chinese Lung AIDS exemption to the First Amendment. In fact, the more we know about the disease and its prognosis, the more it becomes clear that measures that might…might…have been justifiable in March or April are now nothing more than tyranny:

At this juncture, it is becoming very, very clear that the driving forces behind the various regulations governing human activities as we suffer through the current wave of panic porn are two-fold. First, there is the deliberate destruction of human and constitutional rights using an alleged public health emergency to do it. You can see that in Nevada where churches are closed and casinos open. In Maryland, churches operate under draconian restrictions, but the casinos are seemingly free to operate under near-normal conditions. Whether by design or serendipity, the effect is to train us that people who are not elected and who have no skin in the game when it comes to the decisions they inflict upon others are free to craft whatever regulations they wish and if you question them, you are a terrible person.

The second objective is the arrogation of power. Once the public health bureaucracy broke the code on how to reduce the First Amendment to a curious artifact and remove literally all controls from the voting process, we’ve seen Democrat governor after governor step up to protect that power and enlarge upon its use. In Michigan, the governor has essentially adopted the apocryphal quote by Andrew Jackson as official policy. Where Jackson is alleged to have remarked in regards to a Supreme Court decision, “Mr. Marshall has made his decision, now let him enforce it.” Gretchen Whitmer, responding to a decision by the Michigan Supreme Court tossing out her egregious use of emergency orders, essentially said that the regulations would continue no matter what that court said.

Cuomo’s threat to close synagogues is wrong. It should be unacceptable. In a healthy and functioning society, a governor threatening a particular faith with having the power of the state brought down upon them to force them to worship according to the diktat of the governor would be met with condemnation and disobedience. But we are beyond that point. Far beyond that point.
