It’s a bit sad that political discourse in 2020 would necessitate an article highlighting the people on the left who responded to the news of President Trump’s coronavirus diagnosis with grace, but here we are. After news about Trump and his wife, First Lady Melania Trump, testing positive for the virus broke, high-profile individuals on the far left leapt at the opportunity to publicly rejoice over his condition.

However, through all the muck and mire on social media, there were also plenty of left-leaning individuals who wished him a speedy recovery. These are people who tweeted their well wishes to the President and his wife instead of diving into the mud like so many of their colleagues.

For starters, we have former Vice President Joe Biden who is battling it out with Trump for the presidency. He tweeted: “Jill and I send our thoughts to President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump for a swift recovery. We will continue to pray for the health and safety of the president and his family.”

Alabama Sen. Doug Jones also tweeted his support for the President’s recovery. He stated that he hopes “they have no symptoms,” and that he wishes them “a speedy recovery.”

West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin chimed in, saying that he and his wife “are praying for a speedy and healthy recovery for President Trump and the First Lady.”

Former Democratic National Committee Chair and Fox News contributor Donna Brazile expressed her hope for a “speedy recovery.” She even offered to “stir up a little soup” to help them pull through the virus.

Most surprisingly, MSNBC Host Rachel Maddow weighed in, soliciting prayers for the President and First Lady. “God bless the president and the first lady,” she tweeted. “If you pray, please pray for their speedy and complete recovery — and for everyone infected, everywhere.”

Last, but not least, Hawaii Rep. and former presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard gave her support. “My husband Abraham and I offer our best wishes and aloha to President @realDonaldTrump and the First Lady @FLOTUS and praying for their speedy recovery,” she tweeted.

No one can deny that the vitriol over politics has grown worse, especially in this election year. It seems that the country is more divided than it has been for a long time, and sometimes it appears that there is no end in sight for this time of tension and belligerence. However, examples like these demonstrate that we may not be as divided as it looks.

Condemning those on the fringe who are engaging in hateful behavior is necessary; These individuals should be repudiated as often as possible. But it is also important to recognize those who manage to stay above the fray at times.
