Harris: “Outdated,” “Wrongheaded” To Think More Police Means More Safety For The Community | Video

Democratic nominee for vice president Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) campaigned in Detroit, Michigan on Tuesday at an event billed as “Shop Talk” with local black leadership outside Headliners Barbershop on the city’s west side. Harris called it “wrongheaded” to believe that the way for communities to be safe is to have more police and asked people to “reimagine” what a safe community means.

“The other brother was asking about criminal justice. Let’s talk about America’s failure when it comes to understanding how you create safe communities. And by that I mean this. It is outdated, it is wrongheaded thinking to think that the only way you’re going to get communities to be safe is to put more police officers on the street,” Harris said at the event.

“What we have to do, and what we will do is reimagine public safety,” Harris added. “If you want a safe community you have to invest in the health and well-being of that community.”
