Society is moving backward.

We’re becoming less informed, more detached, and less civil. America is a fabric in mid-rip, and as community and faith become passe, our moral center and sense of connection to one another dissolve.

In short, the nation’s conscience is ill.

Is it terminal, or can it be healed?

Perhaps it’s not too late.

But for a view into our deteriorating darkness, look no further than a weekend viral video.

Details are scarce, but if I had to describe the clip, I’d say it captures someone with no soul running toward an unsuspecting man and attempting to murder him.

In response to an incredible blow to the head, the man collapses as dead weight onto the sidewalk.

The video reportedly comes from Baltimore, and according to The Daily Caller, police are searching for both suspect and victim.

How could anyone do such to another human being?

It’s an increasingly relevant question.

Amid frenzied talk of a biological pandemic, we’re suffering a greater plague. Like never before in America, mobs have hijacked city streets, where they destroy the property and lives of innocents without remorse.

Along the way, people are being murdered.

Media maintain radio silence.

And it’s been a while coming: As talking heads on TV have condoned the riots, and while politicians have ordered our tax-funded security to stand down, a bold beast has arisen — one that does not care for your life.

Or your family’s.

One which celebrates death, that delights in murder:

That’s the look and sound of wickedness.

And in some areas of the country, this is our aspiring new normal:

We’re headed toward more:

Back to the incident in Baltimore, on Instagram, City Councilman Eric Costello observed its “depravity”:

“It should go without saying that the complete depravity to human life illustrated in this video is absolutely disgusting and should be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

As for Portlanders protecting themselves with guns (seen above), more is surely to come. While revolutionaries were LARPing in the streets these past months, Americans purchased 5 million more firearms.

With little to no help from elected leaders, citizens will increasingly defend themselves. That will likely lead to more shootings, as both sides increase their armaments.

It’s not a good course, but it’s been set upon by the darkest parts of humanity. And, like all such navigation, it leads to destruction.

COVID-19 is a threat, but it’s nothing compared to evil in the human heart. In Baltimore — and Portland — that seems clear.

The real pandemic is a cancer, not a virus.

We must fight that ugliness, we must beat the disease.

Before it kills the greatest country to ever have lived.

And make no mistake, it can — like a brick to the head.
