Washington, DC – On Monday, the Supreme Court struck down a Louisiana abortion law that would regulate a doctor in mandating admitting privileges at a nearby hospital. The vote was 5-4 to strike down the law, with Chief Justice John Roberts siding with the liberal justices.
Roberts joined the same four liberal justices last year in another abortion ruling in a 5-4 vote. Many had expected the two new conservative justices on the court to help influence decisions in favor of conservatives, but so far, that has proven not to be the case. Justice John Roberts has proven time and again to be the wild card in the situation.
In his statements on his reasoning for siding with the liberal justices, Roberts said it was due to previous precedent. The case in Louisiana was similar to a case in Texas, in which the law was struck down. Roberts states that he must agree with that ruling due to the legal doctrine of stare decisis.
This decision is yet another blow to many conservatives who had hoped the newest members of the court would help change the left-leaning movement. It also brings to the forefront that the ability to turn over Roe v. Wade is a near-impossible task given the state of the courts and society in the United States.
