Charlotte, N.C. — On the most recent episode of the podcast “Verdict w/ Ted Cruz” Daily Wire political commentator Michael Knowles, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX), and United States Attorney General Bill Barr sat down for an interesting discussion about the events that are running rampant across our country.

AG Barr discussed the legal issues currently facing these anarchists intent on destroying federal property and federal and state-owned statues.  With widespread calls for utter lawlessness around the country.  This is an instance where local, state, and federal government and agencies must work together to quell this wrath of violence.

Barr explained the reason for the increase in investigations is heavily associated with the lack of response by other levels of government. One should look no further than at the man responsible for bringing to justice, Minnesota’s Attorney General, Mr. Keith Ellison.  This tweet from Charlie Kirk of the Minnesota AG is less than reassuring as he seeks to pursue and preserve justice for every citizen of Minnesota:

“That’s where the burden is right now, on state and local, and in many places, they’re not stepping up to the plate, they’re not doing their job,” said Barr.

Barr also suggested that many of these riots were protests that were infiltrated by “provocateurs and agitators,” with some even having associations to Antifa.  General Barr indicated that there is “strong evidence of coordination in many of these violent episodes.”

“Fundamentally there are demonstrators who go there with the purpose of demonstrating, but you have a group of provocateurs and agitators, sometimes a significant group, that try to convert those into violent activity and they seem to be well coordinated when they show up.”

“We are seeing strong evidence of coordination in many of these violent episodes,” he explained.

According to Barr, many of the investigations will begin with prosecutions based on the videos of rioters defacing and attempting to tear down monuments in Lafayette Park in Washington, D.C.  The United States Attorney for the District of Columbia recently tweeted the following:  “Four men charged in federal court for attempting to tear down the statue of Andrew Jackson in Lafayette Park Square amid protests.”

Additionally, President Trump tweeted the following:  “MANY people in custody, with many others being sought for Vandalization of Federal Property in Lafayette Park. 10-year prison sentences! @FBIWFO.”

18 U.S.C. § 1361 details the Destruction of Government Property.  The penalties for violations of this section are tied to the extent of the property damage. As amended on September 13, 1994, if the damage exceeds $100, the defendant is subject to a fine of up to $250,000, ten years, imprisonment, or both.

“The voices of peaceful and legitimate protests” have become “hijacked by violent and radical elements” consisting of “outside radicals and agitators” who are “exploiting the situation to pursue their own separate, violent, and extremist agenda,” the attorney general said in the May 31 statement.

“It is time to stop watching the violence and to confront and stop it,” he said. “The continued violence and destruction of property endangers the lives and livelihoods of others, and interferes with the rights of peaceful protestors, as well as all other citizens.”
