Chaos in Charleston: Bernie Pummeled While Moderators Try to Keep Order

Seven candidates squared off Tuesday night for the 10thDemocratic presidential primary Debate in South Carolina.  What started off with the best of intentions, Tuesday night’s debate turned into a raucous affair with candidates speaking over one another as CBS moderators Norah O’Donnell, Gayle King, Margaret Brennan, Major Garrett, and Bill Whitaker struggled to rein them in.  The debate was hosted by CBS News and the Congressional Black Caucus.

A few differences occurred as billionaire businessman Tom Steyer returned to the stage after failing to qualify for the last debate in Nevada.  However, the biggest difference were the attacks on Senator Bernie Sanders that were paired with claims his nomination would result in sweeping plans to a downballotrout for the Democrats in November.

No one was off limits during this contentious night as candidates scuffled with moderators and jabbed each other on spending, foreign policy, “Democratic Socialism” (whatever that is), and more.

What was most obvious was the anxiety from other candidates; anxiety that Senator Sanders would continue his win streak that could result in an unstoppable momentum with Super Tuesday (March 3rd) quickly approaching.

As the rounds continued, Sanders tried to downplay the historic-low unemployment numbers the Trump economy has produced, by arguing that the economy was only going well for “people like” former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg.

Quickly learning how the Russia obsessed Democrats operate, Bloomberg immediately brought up recent reports that Russia is working to help the Sanders campaign.  “I think that Donald Trump thinks it would be better if he’s president—I do not think so,” Bloomberg stated.  “Vladimir Putin thinks that Donald Trump should be president of the United States.  And that’s why Russia is helping you get elected, so you’ll lose to him.”  Not to be outdone, Sanders immediately responded with accusations of Bloomberg’s support for Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Amazingly, Breadline Bernie did an about-face on views he’s had his entire adult life by insisting he condemned “authoritarians” and claimed that his recent praise for Fidel Castro’s literacy programs was similar to former President Barack Obama’s previous statements.  Immediately, Joe Biden and Mayor Pete rebuffed his assertions.  This also drew a quick reaction from the audience as they booed Sanders for his comments.

But the biggest take down of Bernie came when current Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar hit Sanders’ plans to fund his astronomically expensive “everything is free” programs.  Proposals that include to seizing trillions from the “net worth” of the nation’s most wealthy, tax increases on the middle class, and drastic military cuts.  Klobuchar stated, “the math does not add up!  In fact, just on ’60 Minutes’ this weekend, he said he wasn’t gonna rattle through the ‘nickels and dimes.’  Well, let me tell you how many nickels and dimes we’re talking about.  Nearly 60 trillion.

Senator Klobuchar continued, “Do you know how much that is, for all of his programs?  That’s three times the American economy.  Not the federal government.  The entire economy!” The South Carolina primary is Saturday and is do or die for many campaigns.
