Immigration Showdown? Likely Supreme Court Battle Looms After Appeals Court Ruling

On Wednesday, the 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals sided with the Trump administration on a high profile immigration case. The appeals court reversed a lower courts ruling that required the administration to release funds to seven states and New York City. The case will now likely end up at the Supreme Court.

In January 2017, President Trump issued an executive order that withheld federal funding from these locations. These seven states and NYC had declared themselves sanctuaries from immigration policies. They state that forcing compliance with immigration laws will discourage immigrants from reporting crimes and cooperating with investigations. They also argued that funding was being withheld for political purposes.

In 2018, a lower court ruled in favor of the states and New York City and blocked Trump’s order. Now, the appeal will likely end up at the Supreme Court. The case is high profile as many states and cities have argued for and against the sanctuary treatment.

The Justice Department called the ruling a win for the majority of Americans. But the ruling differs from other rulings across the country on the same matter. This leaves the opportunity open for the Supreme Court to weigh in. It is expected that the case will be appealed to the Supreme Court for it’s verdict soon.

Earlier this month, AG William Barr announced a crackdown on cities that were getting in the way of federal immigration law. In his statements, Barr said that the sanctuary policies that are shared by these locations are encouraging illegal immigrants to escape. There is a key word here in all of this – illegal.

While Trump and the Justice Department are attempting to enforce federal law, Democrats continue to push for anything but law and order. The funding is not withheld for political reasons, but legal reasons. If you want federal funding, you should participate in the federal programs and encourage compliance.

As I have stated many times before, the issue is not with immigration, but simply illegal immigration. Republicans support legal immigration, but Democrats would like you to think otherwise. In 2018, one pollster said that Republicans want immigrants that will be loyal to the United States. I think that is very true. Republicans want to see immigrants have a way for citizenship that is fair, but also given to those who are loyal.

The Democrats want to give citizenship to anyone that is here, whether they agree with our laws or are loyal to the US or not. We already have enough questionable loyalty to the United States. For examples, see Rep. Ilhan Omar, Rep. Rashida Tlaib or Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. This is simply not the best path for the overall well being of our country. Immigrants should be loyal to our country and realize the great thing that it is.

Republicans will support common sense immigration. This means a secure border. It means deterring illegal immigration. It means complying with immigration law at the state and local level. Immigration makes our country great, there’s no question about it. But it should be safe and legal.
