That Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and his former Constitutional law professor Laurence Tribe (Harvard) don’t exactly have the most harmonious post-law school student/teacher relationship would be quite the understatement. The two have been known to spar over politics and law on occasion, especially since the election of President Trump in 2016.

But as most people with even a passing knowledge of Tribe’s Twitter rantings know by now, Tribe is consumed by Trump Derangement Syndrome much in the same way Never Trumper George Conway and NYT columnist Paul Krugman are. There’s just no reasoning with them and no getting through.

Naturally, with hating Trump comes hating some of his staunchest defenders, including his former student Ted Cruz. Tribe proudly demonstrated this by retweeting a particularly nasty attack from Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI) against Cruz that was featured in a Washington Post hit piece that explores Cruz and Trump’s political relationship over the years:

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to tell you that citing unhinged Mazie Hirono as an authority on anything is like holding up Bill Clinton as the high standard bearer on the virtues of staying faithful to your wife. But Cruz took a different, more pointed approach with Tribe in response to his tweet.

He took Tribe to task for not only his close-mindedness and lack of professionalism but also for reducing himself to a mere Twitter troll by approvingly sharing Hirono’s insult:

With all due respect to Cruz, it’s only in that last line that I disagree with what he told Tribe. The law professor is not “better than this.” Not at all.
